Leong Jun Hao landed his first title this year when he won the Men’s Singles crown of the BERGAMOT KL Masters Malaysia Super 100 2023 in emphatic fashion by beating Chia Hao Lee from Chinese Taipei at the Titiwangsa Stadium. Leading for the most part in the exchange between the top two ranked players in the tournament, Jun Hao managed to focus on the title on home soil.
In the battle that lasted 43 minutes, the 24-year-old Jun Hao overcame the tournament top seed Hao Lee 22-20, 21-13.
“The key was to keep calm as I was leading all the way. And he was chasing me and pressing me hard for every point,” said Jun Hao, who leaves tonight for the Korean Masters.
“I’m thankful for being able to win in front of the home fans. And I would like to thank all those who came today to support me.
“There was pressure for sure as I was playing at home and everyone expects me to win.”
In the meantime, Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See won the Mixed Doubles title after beating Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Phataimas Muenwong from Thailand.
However, the tournament’s top seed was made to work for every point before winning 21-9, 17-21, 21-10.
“Very happy, very happy,” exclaimed Peng Soon, after the duel that lasted just over an hour.
“It was fabulous to win the title at home even though it is the Super 100. We know that it will be tough for us to make the cut for the Olympic Games next year. But we will still go forward from tournament to tournament.”
Added Yee See: “We know that the opponents will vary their strategy along the way. So we struggled somewhat. We lost the second set but recovered in the third to win the title.”
On the other hand, Malaysia’s other representative in the finals Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong failed to land the Men’s Doubles crown when they could not get the better of Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan-Chen Sheng Fa.
Hang Yee-Eng Cheong conceded to a 21-23, 17-21 loss in 40 minutes.
“It was a very difficult match. They were in attack mode all the way,” said Hang Yee.
Added Eng Cheong: “I feel that we were under a lot of pressure to play at home. That was our issue today.”
