Lee Zii Jia in the men’s singles and two mixed doubles pairs Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie stayed alive in the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters by advancing to the quarter-finals.
Â
However, in the second round matches played at the famed Istora Senaya it was the end of the road for the women’s doubles pair Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean and Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen and the remaining men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.
Â
Zii Jia outplayed Thailand’s Sitthikom Thammasin – defeating his opponent in 13 and 13 for a quarter-final clash against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen who defeated homester Shesar Hiren Rhustavito 21-11, 21-19.
Â
Sixth seeds Peng Soon-Liu Ying, the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medal winners, needed only 31 minutes to advance to the last eight after snuffing out England’s Ben Lane-Jessica Pugh 21-13, 21-10.
Â
For a place in the semi-finals the Thailand Masters champions face another English pair Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith who downed Korea’s Seo Seung-jae-Chae Yujung 23-25, 21-16, 21-15.
Â
Soon Huat-Shevon needed three games to upset seventh seeds Chris Adcock-Gabrielle Adcock. The Malaysians carved out a 21-19, 21-23, 21-7 win in 57 minutes.
Â
They, however, have a mountain to scale in the quarter-finals when they face top seeds Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong of China. The Chinese were too strong for Indonesia’s Praveen jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti in their 21-16, 21-12 victory.
Â
Malaysia Masters runners-up Yew Sin-Ee Yi failed to make the quarter-finals. China’s No 2 seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen handed the Malaysians a 21-13, 21-18 defeat.
Â
In the women’s doubles Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen lost 14-21, 13-21 to Japan’s Olympic champions Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi while Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean lost a 77-minute against Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai. The Thais won 19-21, 23-21, 21-14.
Â
Meanwhile, Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie shocked China’s world No 2 Shi Yuqi in straight games 22-20, 21-6 to join compatriot Anthony Ginting in the quarter-finals.
Â
For Shi Yuqi it was his second defeat in a row after losing to Malaysia’s Liew Daren in the quarter-finals in the Malaysia Masters last week.
