Kunming in China was the destination for the Myanmar athletics team who were selected to represent their country for the upcoming 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
Prior to that, the track and field team had trained in Naypyitaw for more than a year, before they started the Kunming stint for a further three months.
“The reason why we choose Kunming is because it is located in the highlands, and training there will assist the athlete’s resistance and capability to improve. If they can get good records during the training, they will achieve better results in KL2017,” said Mya Than Htike, the vice chairman of the Myanmar Track and Field Federation.
Eleven Myanmar athletes will be competing in the track and field events at the which will offer a total of 46 gold medals.
Myanmar will compete in ten out of the more than 40 events in athletics.
“We selected the athletes from various institutes of sports. There are not many athletes to select from so we always compete in only a few events. Despite being the best athletes of Myanmar, it is not easy for them to win gold as their rivals may have better records,” Than Htike said. – BY MAIZATUL JAMNY MUHAMMAD ROSLI
