The Malaysian men and women’s field hockey teams qualified for the final of the SEA Games hockey competition at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
Stephen van Huizen’s Malaysian team defeated Myanmar 6-0 in the last preliminary round match on Sunday (Aug 27). However, both teams will go head to head once again during the final on Tuesday(Aug 29).
Shahril Saabah (10th, 40th), Fitri Shaari (14th), Razie Rahim (18th, 23rd) and Aiman Nik Rosemi (41st) scored against Myanmar.
The men’s team got off to its campaign in the Kuala Lumpur chapter of the 29th SEA Games with an 18-1 victory over Indonesia and followed with 6-0 and 9-1 wins over Thailand and Singapore.
Meanwhile, Singapore defeated Thailand 3-2 with a hat-trick from Mohammed Sabri Yuhari (26th, 30th and 39th minutes) while Thailand replied through Vong Lenbury (49th) and Thanakrit Boon Art (51st).
The women’s final will be between the Malaysians and Thailand on Monday (Aug 28).
“We have players who are capable of playing at the highest level,” said men’s team head coach Stephen van Huizen. “I am only disappointed that they did not use this opportunity to score more goals.”
