# Liu Ying kayoed by fever
By Rizal Abdullah
Malaysia’s top pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying came unstuck in the USD325,000 Yonex Sunrise India Open Superseries – not on the court but through illness.
The Malaysians were forced to concede a walkover in the semi-finals to top seeds Zheng Siwei-Chen Qingchen when Liu Ying came down with fever after the quarter-final match against Korea’s Kim Gi-jung-Shin Seung-chan on Friday. The Malaysians beat the Koreans 22-20, 19-21, 21-15.
With the walkover went Peng Soon-Liu Ying’s hopes of winning their first superseries title but it was a wise move by the Malaysians who hope to be ready for the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open which begins in Kuching on Tuesday.
After losing the All-England final to China’s Lu Kai-Huang Yaqiong in three sets the Malaysians were going great guns at the Sri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi and hopes were high of the Rio Olympics silver medallist making the second successive final.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying, who won the silver at Rio and the recent All-England Championships fought for an hour before prevailing 22-20, 19-21, 21-15 against Korea’s Kim Gi-jung-Shin Seung-chan.
Meanwhile, it will be a repeat of the Rio Olympics final in the women’s singles. Top seed and Olympic champion Carolina Marin defeated Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 21-16, 21-14 while Olympic silver medallist P.V. Sindhu overcame second seed Sung Ji-hyun of Korea 21-18, 14-21, 21-14 in a 76 minute battle.
The men’s singles final will be Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen who reached his third successive India Open final. The Rio Olympics bronze medallist beat Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long 21-12, 21-13.
He will play Taiwan’s Chen Tien Chou in the final after the seventh seed shut out Denmark’s surprise package Anders Antonsen 21-17, 21-14 in 46 minutes.
