Top seeds Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong eased into the quarter-finals in the men’s doubles in the Yonex Sunrise India Open Superseries but face a tough hurdle in China’s Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen for a place in the last four.
The former World No 1 were hardly stretched in their 21-10, 21-17 win in 27 minutes over the scratch pair of Tan Boon Heong-Hendra Setiawan (Malaysia-Indonesia).
The fifth seeded Chinese came through a 21-12, 23-21 win over Denmark’s Kaim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen on a day when fourth seeds and current world No 1 Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia stayed on course for their second successive superseries title in two weeks.
The Indonesians who won the All-England title last week are seeded fourth in New Delhi. They advanced with a 21-16, 21-18 win over Japan’s Takuto Inouei-Yuki Kaneko.
Malaysia’s top mixed doubles pair – Olympics and All-England runners-up Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying will face Koreans Kim Gi-jung-Kim Ha-na for a place in the last four.
In the second round the Malaysians roared to a 21-11, 21-19 win over Indonesia’s Edi Subaktiar-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja while the Koreans came back from a set down to beat Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen-Sara Thygesen 15-21, 22-20, 21-19 in a close fought 62-minute match.
