Some sweeping changes were made to the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s coaching set up on Thursday.
Back in the BAM stable is former national champion and Datuk Lee Chong Wei’s coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.
Misbun who had a “father-son” relationship during his previous stint with the BAM returns as the new head coach of the men’s singles department.
Misbun, who quit the BAM after a clash with the management in 2011, is expected to take up the hot-seat Hari Raya.
BAM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria announced the changes in the coaching set-yp after a Coaching and Training Committee meeting on Thursday and said Misbun will be assisted by Hendrawan, Indra Wijaya and Sairul Amar Ayob.
Former Thomas Cupper Cheah Soon Kit is the new head coach of the men’s doubles while Tey Seu Bok has been moved from the men’s singles department to head the women’s singles department.
Soon Kit will have Jeremy Gan and Rosman Razak as his assistants.
Women’s doubles head coach is Wong Pei Tty who will be assisted by Lim Pek Siah and Hoon Thien How while Chin Ee Hui is the head of the mixed doubles.
“Misbun understands what it takes to be a top player…he has the experience in this as he was Chong Wei’s former coach,” said Norza.
BAM technical director Morten Frost welcomed the changes and described it as a “very strong combination (Misbun and Soon Kit)” as the focus is on the Thomas Cup.
“We are ambitious in our target,” said the Dane. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
