Malaysia’s top two pairs in the men’s doubles advanced to the second round in the USD350,000 OUE Singapore Open but was the end of the road for the women’s doubles after the completion of the first round matches at the Indoor Stadium in Singapore on Wednesday.
Former world number one and second seeds Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong were made to slog by Taiwan’s Lee Sheng-mu-Tsai Chia-hsin for their 20-22, 21-15, 21-18 win in 53 minutes. The Malaysians will face the newly formed Indonesia-Malaysia partnership of Hendra Setiawan-Tan Boon Heong who won 21-14, 21-19 against Thailand’s Kittinupong Kedren-Dechapol Puavaranukroh.
Malaysia’s number two pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Yi Ee were too strong for India’s M.R. Arjun-Ramachandran Shlok – needing only 30 minutes for their 21-17, 21-17 win and a place in the second round.
However, it will a tough hurdle for the Malaysians for a place in the quarter-finals against China’s fourth seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen. The Chinese beat Mohammad Ahsan-Rian Agung Saputro of Indonesia 21-13, 21-15.
The young Malaysians, however, who stunned Denmark’s sixth seeded Mads Conrad Petersen-Mads Pieler Kolding in the first round in Kuching last week, are capable of doing another giant killing act in Singapore.
The recent spate of defeats in the early rounds continued to haunt Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei when they suffered another first round defeat. They failed to to get past Taiwan’s Hsu Ya-ching-Wu Ti-jung and lost 22-20,18-21, 12-21 in 62 minutes.
It was also heartbreak for second ranked Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean who were edged out 19-21, 21-14, 20-22 by Indonesia’s Anggia Shitta Awanda-Ni Ketut Mahadewi Istarani.
It was another gritty performance by former junior world champion Goh Jin Wei before she bowed out in the women’s singles.Playing in only her second superseries tournament after reaching the second round in the Malaysia Open in Kuching last week, Jin Wei lost out on experience against Korea’s second seed Sung Ji-hyung in her 21-16, 19-21, 21-13 defeat after a marathon 76 minutes.
Meanwhile, privateer Zulfadli Zulkifli is the only Malaysian remaining in the men’s singles after another privateer Chong Wei Feng was beaten 21-18, 21-18 by Thailand’s eighth seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in the first round.
Zulfadli beat Taiwan’s Hsu Jan-hao 21-13, 21-15.
