# Chong Wei off to a winning start men’s singles in Group A
# Kian Meng-Pei Jing lose their opening match in mixed doubles
Malaysia’s former world number one Lee Chong Wei walked away with a straight games 21-14, 21-13 win over Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long for a roaring start to his Group A campaign in the season-ending Dubai World Superseries Finals in Dubai on Wednesday.
The Malaysian ace, a four-time winner of the World Superseries Finals, and currently ranked number two in the world, will now face South Korea’s Son Won-ho on Friday. China’s Chen Long, the other player in the group, has withdrawn for the Finals at the last minute after the Olympic champion suffered a knee injury.
Malaysia, however, had losing start in the mixed doubles when debutants Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing fell to a straight games 12-21, 11-21 defeat to China’s Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping in only 36 minutes.
For Chong Wei, the win over Ka Long was sweet revenge for his 21-12, 15-21, 21-19 defeat to the 23-year-old opponent in the quarter-finals in the Tahoe China Open Superseries Premier in Fuzhou last month.
With the win over Ka Long the Malaysian now leads the head-to-head count 6-1 and is set to achieve his initial target of reaching the semi-finals. The top two in the group will advance.BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
