Former national junior Vanessa Ng Po Lyn not only left the home fans disappointed but was also let down by her own performance when she crashed out of the Girls’ Under-16 singles with a first-round defeat in the 100PLUS National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals in Seremban on Thursday.
“I am happy with the way I played today. My target was at least the semi-finals but I was nervous. It was a disappointing performance as I can play much better than this,” said Vanessa, the third seed, after her 17-21, 21-23 loss to Oh Jia Qi (BAM/Johor)) at the Negri Sembilan Chinese Recreation Club.
“It hurts that I lost to a junior when we were together in the BAM squad. To a certain extent, I was under pressure playing in front of my home fans…I simply did not get the feel in my match.”
For Jia Qi, it is one match at a time after knocking off a seeded player. The Johor lass next plays Selangor’s Lim Qi Ling in the second round. Qi Ling stopped another Johor player Teoh Ju Kee with a 21-17, 21-16 win in 26 minutes.
“Of course I am happy to beat Vanessa who was my senior in the BAM squad. It is a good start which has boosted my confidence and I hope to ride on this win to go far,” said Jia Qi.
Meanwhile, defending champion Arena Satu Samin of Sabah kicked off her campaign in style as she crushed Kuala Lumpur’s Amanda Yap Hwa Leng 21-9, 21-11 in 19 minutes to earn a second-round clash against Tan Shen Thing (BAM/Penang) who outclassed Tan Jet Sin (Pahang) 21-11, 21-15.
Second seed Joanne Ng May Yin (BAM/Melaka) was also impressive as she marched into the second round at the expense of Johor’s Hoe Shi Yun 21-15, 21-16 and will face Selangor’s Sik Xiao Hui who won 21-14, 21-12 against Tan Mei Xin (Penang) for a place in the quarter-finals.
There was also disappointment for Negri Sembilan in the Boys’ Under-16 singles with the defeat of Sie Jie Lok in a first-round match. The NS hope battled for 49 minutes but could not stop V. Poopathi (BAM/Kedah) from prevailing 21-18, 19-21, 21-6.
Poopathi next takes on Melaka’s 3/4 seed Ng Yaw Pin who outplayed Kok Jia Zheng of Selangor 21-18, 21-7.
Second-seeded Ong Zhen Yi (BAM/Penang) gave strong signals in his 21-10, 21-10 win over Teo Jie Sern (Melaka). Zhen Yi’s second-round opponent is Kuala Lumpur’s Hooi Shao Herng who was equally impressive as he ousted Johor’s Tiew Hen Zhuan with a similar scoreline.
In another first-round match, Justin Hoh Shou Wei (BAM/KUL) needed only 20 minutes to advance as he blasted Kedah’s Faris Amrin Roslan 21-7, 21-9. Justin’s second-round opponent is Ong Sheng Khai (KUL) – 21-18, 23-21 winner over Selangor’s Kenny Khew Han Yang.
