# V Shem-Wee Kiong blown away in men’s doubles

By Rizal Abdullah

Malaysia’s No 1 men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong were blown away in 33 minutes as the top seeds fell to a crushing 15-21, 17-21 defeat to China’s fifth seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen in the quarter-finals in the USD325,000 Yonex Sunrise India Open Super Series on Friday.

It was another below par performance from the Rio Olympics silver medallists but the country’s top mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying made up for the disappointment by reaching the semi-finals.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, who won the silver at Rio and the recent All-England Championships fought for an hour before prevailing 22-20, 19-21, 21-15 against Korea’s Kim Gi-jung-Shin Seung-chan.

The Malaysians, however, have a mountain to scale for a place in Sunday’s final. They face top seeds Zheng Siwei-Chen Qingchen of China. The Chinese were hardly stretched by Japan’s Kenta Kazuno-Ayane Kurihara in their 21-12, 21-16 win.

It is the first semi-final for Peng Soon-Liu Ying in the India Open. This is enough to motivate them against the top ranked Chinese opponents as they chase their first super series title.

Meanwhile Rio Olympics silver medal winner P.V. Sindhu defeated 2012 London bronze medal winner and compatriot Saina Nehwal 21-16, 22-20 in a 47-minute match to reach the semi-finals.

The lanky Indian lass will face second seed Sung Ji-hyun of Korea who sent defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand crashing out of the tournament with a 21-16, 22-20 win.

The other semifinal will be between top seed and Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain and Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.
