Penang lived up to their top billings and looked set to cruise into the quarterfinals after a convincing 3-0 win over Sabah in the Boys Team Under-16 of the 100PLUS National Inter-State Under 12 & 16 Championships, held today in Kota Bharu.
Barring any upsets, the defending champion will likely fill up the top spot after their last match Group A match against Perlis tomorrow. Sabah, steered by this year’s 100PLUS Junior circuit runner-up Demond Anthony Samin, is expected to take the second spot after trouncing Perlis 3-0 today.
The other seeded teams – Kedah (2), Selangor (3) and Johor (4) – are expected to follow suit after convincing wins in their respective matches.
The four-day championships, featuring some 321 young shuttlers from all 15 states, is being held at the PBNK Hall in Kota Bharu.
Kedah and Perak face each other tomorrow to decide on Group B winner while in Group C, Selangor and Pahang will lock horns to confirm their quarterfinals berths and who sits at the top of the group.
In the Girls Team Under 16 competition, Penang, led by Tan Zhing Yi, and Pahang are also on course for the knockout rounds after winning their first two matches. Penang registered full points in Group C standings, winning convincingly against Perlis (3-0) and Terengganu (3-0).
Pahang were second in the ranking order after winning over Terengganu 2-1 and Perlis 3-0. Both Penang and Pahang will clash against each other tomorrow to decide on the Group C winner.
Meanwhile, the Melaka Boys and Girls U-12 are also flying high in the tournament, winning their first two matches to top their respective groups.
The Melaka Boys team, steered by Chan Cher Yew, found themselves at the top of Group D after trouncing Nigeria Sembilan and fourth seed Perak with identical scores of 3-0. Meanwhile, the Girls team are on course for the knockout round after topping Group D will full four points.
The quarterfinal and semifinal ties will be held on Friday while the finals of both the Under 16 (Boys and Girls) and Under 12 (Boys and Girls) take place on Saturday.
