IT was an outstanding day for Phee Jinq En who set a new Games record in the women’s 100m breaststroke on a day where Singapore produced a strong show in the swimming competition at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil on Thursday (24 Aug).Â
It was the only record set at the pool on the fourth day of competition. The 19-year old lass punched her fist in the air after finishing first ahead of Singapore’s Samantha Louisa Ginn Yeo in second and Anandia Treciel Evato of Indonesia in third place.Â
Phee said her only goal at this SEA Games was to win a gold medal after her failure in Singapore two years ago.Â
“I never thought of breaking Siow Yi Ting’s record as it has stood for eight years now. So, definitely it’s a huge honour to be able to achieve the feat,” said Selangor-born swimmer.Â
Meanwile, the Malaysian men’s team, led by Wilson Sim, failed to emulate Phee’s successful feat in the 4x200m freestyle relay team as they came in third to take home the bronze.
Schooling won the 100m in 48.93s to win the gold followed Vietnam’s Hoang Quy Phuoc who took home the silver in 49.31s. Singaporean Darren Lim clocked 50.56s for the bronze.
