Myanmar Times journalist Carolyn Pliquet is loving every single moment of her time at the KL2017 Games.
The German writer, who has been covering all of Myanmar’s – men and women – football matches since the start of the event on 14 August, was delighted with the preparations and atmosphere of the 29th SEA Games edition.
“So far I’ve just visited football matches and I know that many other sports have already started.
“But I think it’s a really big event and I see that the hosts have done a good job in terms of preparations such as security measures and I am enjoying everything,” said Pliquet.
The 22-year-old, who is also the daughter of the men’s national coach – Gerd Zeise, – is rooting for the silver medalists to win their first ever gold medal this year.
According to Pliquet whose second home is in Yangon, the spirit of the nation are all fired up ever since Zeise guided Myanmar to the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2015.
“Because of that the country has huge expectations on the sport and they always do. No matter how little or how big the tournament is, they always want their team to win.
“I’m very grateful that I can get that first hand experience and information of the atmosphere and the players. I actually know most of them since 2013 when I first visited my dad.
“So for now, I’m even more excited to watch Myanmar win rather than a German match. It’s actually my dad’s seventh year with the national team now and he knows that his team is capable of producing results.
“But he is also a firm believer of the famous saying in football – anything can happen. He always say that we have to play the match one at a time and we can’t go around telling people that we’re gonna win this here because football is unpredictable,” added Pliquet. – BY ALVIN OH
