Puchong United BC marched into the semi-finals in the Resorts World Genting Champions Challenge with a hard fought 12-8 win over Petaling BC in the quarter-finals at the Arena of Stars in Genting on Wednesday.
And once again it was Thomas Cupper Liew Daren who set Puchong on the winning trail with a come-from-behind win in four sets win over national champion Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin.
The 28-year-old Liew Daren shrugged off a muscle pull in his right leg before he settled down – taking off once he found his rhythm for a 4-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-10 win in 34 minutes.
In the women’s singles Puchong United again rode on Ayumi Mine’s splendid form in the Purple League. The Japanese hammered out a 11-4, 11-6, 11-4 win in 29 minutes over Indonesian Elisabeth Perwaningtyas for a 6-1 lead.
However, Petaling BC came back strongly in the mixed doubles with Ardvinsyah Putra-Devi Tika Permatasari romping home with a 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 win over Cheng Wen Heng-Yew Hong Cheng to keep their hopes alive.
The men’s doubles was a five-set thriller with Puchong’s Ow Yao Han-Tan Wee Gieen winning 11-4, 6-11, 11-7, 10-11, 11-8 against Low Ming Hui-Shia Chun Kang which left the second men’s singles between Soo Teck Zhi (Puchong) and Tan Vi Hen (Petaling) as the decider.
It was another five set thriller with Teck Zhi getting the much desired points with a 9-11, 11-4, 10-11, 11-5, 11-5 win to hand Puchong a 12-8 win and a place in the semis.
“I had a poor start in the first set and felt a pull in my right leg. But it got better as I warmed up and found the rhythm after that. However, I am surprised that Iskandar did not ride on his win in the first set,” said Liew Daren.
Iskandar, was a disappointed man after the man.
“I tried to increase my speed against Daren when he found his rhythm and confidence. Unfortunately it flopped miserably and I am disappointed with my performance,” said Iskandar.
