Overnight leader Ben Leong retained a share of the top spot after the second round of the inaugural RM180,000 Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Taiping Closed Championship at Taiping Golf & Country Club today after carding a three-under 68.
M. Sasidaran, who fired a five-under 67 to climb to nine-under-par at the halfway stage of the tournament, joined the 29-year-old Sabah pro atop the leaderboard on 135.
On a day when the tournament was interrupted by heavy rain shortly after 1 o’clock and the player still able to post decent scores, in part due to playing with preferred lies.
Nicholas Fung also shot a five-under and moved up to third place on seven-under 137.
With the soft conditions good for scoring low, Anis Hassan had a 70 that left him in a fourth place another stroke back, while R. Nachimuthu signed for a 69 and fifth spot on 139.
Sasidaran’s round was blurred by two bogeys – on the par-3 4th and 17th holes, which were offset by seven birdies, four on the front nine and three on the homeward stretch. It was telling performance by a player who is due a good finish on Tour and it left him to say: “I played well today and hit the ball solidly. I made a couple of mistakes but also made some good iron shots into the greens, where I putt not too bad. Hopefully it can continue as I try to finish the tournament strongly.”
