Selangor reigned supreme in the 100PLUS National Junior Circuit Zone B (2nd leg), sweeping seven of the 12 titles at stake in the Under-16, Under-14 and Under-12 finals played at the Kedah Badminton Hall in Alor Setar on Saturday.
The Klang Valley badminton powerhouse took the Boys’ and Girls’ Under-16 singles, Girls’ Under-14 singles, the Boys’ and Girls’ Under-14 doubles and the Boys’ Under-12 singles and doubles.
Hosts Kedah did well to win three titles – the Boys’ and Girls’ Under-16 doubles, and the Boy’s Under-14 singles while Negri Sembilan came out tops in the Under-12 Girls’ category by winning the singles and doubles.
Selangor’s Jimmy Wong, winner of the first-leg in Kuala Terengganu in March retained his Boys’ Under-16 title with a 21-13, 21-11 win over Kedah’s Mohd Erfan Abdul Rahman in a 30-minute final.
Kedah, however, gave their supporters plenty to cheer when Erfan teamed up with Mohamed Faris Amrin Roslan to take the Boys’ Under-16 doubles with a thrilling 21-12, 20-22, 21-16 win over Terengganu’s Muhammad Shahrul Mat Desa-Muhammad Ashrul Yusnizam.
There was more joy for Kedah when Muhammad Edry Syazwan Yuzli turned the tables on Selangor’s Muhammad Adam Shaz with a 21-16, 21-17 win for the Boys’ Under-14 singles title.
In the Boys’ Under-14 doubles final it was an all-Selangor affair with joint 3/4 seeds Adam-Wing Hong Xiang pulling off an upset over top seeds and winners of the first-leg Webber Lee Wei Han-Lim Zhian Meng prevailing 20-22, 21-15, 21-19 for the title.
In a repeat final of the first-leg Selangor’s top K. Letshanaa retained her Girls’ Under-16 singles title with 21-17, 21-14 win over compatriot and second seed Loh Zhi Wei.
The Girls’ Under-14 singles title also went Selangor’s way with Siti Nurhshuhaini Azam retaining her title with 21-9, 21-10 win over Sik Xiao Hui in an all-Selangor final.
Nurshuhaini completed a grand double by also winning the Girls’ Under-14 doubles with Yee Pui Yi. The second seeds upset top seeds Chew Tze Teng-Belle Lee Pei Er of Negri Sembilan in straight games 21-19, 21-18.
Negri also had a double winner in Adinya Anuar in the Girls’ Under-12 category. In the singles final Adinya defeated teammate Ang Jia Yee 21-19, 21-7 in a repeat of last year’s final to retain her title.
The duo later teamed up to beat Terengganu’s Goh Sze Ning-Asma Husan Zakaria 21-5, 21-7 for the Under-12 doubles title.
Meanwhile, the Zone A finals in Kota Kinabalu and Zone C finals in Melaka will be held on Sunday.Â
