Former kingpins Selangor kissed goodbye to their Malaysia Cup campaign after an embarrassing 1-2 defeat to Premier League outfit Sabah in a second-round match in Group D at the Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday.
The defeat left the Red Giants without a win after four matches. It was Selangor’s second defeat to the East Malaysians after their defeat 1-2 defeat in a first-round match at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu last week.
For the record, Selangor has won the prestigious Malaysia Cup for a record 33 times and their failure to get past the group stage is an all-time low for the Klang Valley outfit.
Sabah led 2-0 by the 85th minute with goals by Hector Ramos, Sabah top hitman with 14 goals, and Serbian striker Rodoljub Paunovic added the second.
A penalty four minutes into added time gave Selangor some respect to the scoreline with their Spaniard striker Rufino Segovia hitting the target.
The win took Sabah to the top of the group with 10 points from matches, dislodging Pahang on eight points. PKNP (Perak SEDC) is third on four and Selangor without a point at the bottom.
In Group B encounter played at the Tun Abdul Razak Stadium in Jengka, PKNS FC exacted sweet revenge on Premier League champions Felda United with a 1-0 win – with national trainee Mahali Jasuli hitting the winner in the 11th minute.
The win for PKNS was sweet revenge for PKNS who lost 3-2 at the Shah Alam Stadium in Shah Alam last week after leading 2-0.
Despite the defeat, Felda United remained on top – ahead of PKNS – on goal with seven points after four matches. Melaka United is in third place with six points and Police propping the group with only one point. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
