The Singapore Under-15 and Under-18 National Teams will be heading to Hong Kong to take part in the Jockey Club International Youth Invitational Football Tournament 2019. Held from 19 to 22 April, the tournament also features teams from Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam and hosts Hong Kong.
The 20-strong squad for the U15s includes three players from newly-crowned National ‘B’ Division champions Jurongville Secondary School and was selected from a pool of 60 school players, who had been invited for training sessions since the start of the year. Meanwhile, U18 National Team Head Coach Fadzuhasny Juraimi has called up six players from Singapore Premier League clubs.
Philippe Aw, U15 National Team Head Coach, said: “This tournament is important for our U15 boys as most of them will be playing international matches for the first time. We know that the level of football will be higher compared to the competitions they are used to locally. This will be good exposure for our boys as we prepare for upcoming tournaments like the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U15 Championship and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U16 qualifiers later this year.”
This will Aw’s first official assignment since being appointed and he added: “It is with much pride that I am leading these boys to represent Singapore in an international competition. I’m excited to see the level we are at compared to our Asian counterparts. Most importantly, our boys must display discipline, commitment and teamwork when donning the national jersey!”
Fadzuhasny commented: “The team comprises several players who have experience playing against stronger and tougher opponents. We will be playing against strong teams in this tournament and this is a good opportunity for the boys to compete and see how far we have progressed.
“Coincidentally we have been drawn in the same group as Vietnam in the AFF U18 Championship. Playing against them in this competition will definitely be beneficial in our preparations for the AFF tournament in August.”
