After their painful exit in the FA Cup in the third round Terengganu are back on track in the Super League with a thumping 3-0 win over Melaka at the Hang Jebat Stadium on Friday.
With the win the Turtle moved up to second place with 11 points after six matches -leaving coach Irfan Bakto pleased with the away win after the defeats to Johor Darul Takzim (1-0) in the league and 3-1 to Selangor in the FA Cup.
Irfan, who has yet to recover from the FA Cup exit, is now able to smile as he plots his team’s charge in the Super League and believes that the Turtles have the material to challenge four-time winners JDT.
Irfan did make some changes to the team – bringing in Bruno Suzuki from Terengganu FC II (feeder squad). And he did not disappoint – always a thorn in the Melaka defence.
Skipper Kipre Tchetche was the toast Terengganu – nocthing a brace in the 27thand 74th minutes before former Negri Sembilan player Lee Tuck tucking home third on 80 minutes.
“The FA Cup exit is still fresh in my mind…we simply lost on a day when Selangor showed their true capabilities. It was painful defeat as we also lost to JDT at home in a league match. Two home defeats left us shattered.
“Now we are focused on the league and the win against Melaka is something we can work on. There are still some shortcomings that we need to iron out as we plug the loopholes,” said Irfan.
Over at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar the Red Eagles soared high with an impressive 4-0 win over Selangor – a defeat that left the Red Giants in tatters.
Sando Da Silva scored a brace in the 45th and 65th minutes while Syazwan Zainon opened the floodgates as early as the third minute from a cross from Andik Vermansyah, who donned Selangor colours until last year.
Sandro not only netted twice but also had a hand in Akram Mahinan’s fourth goal in the 83rd minute. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
