* Red Giants undone by an own goal in 3-1 defeat
Australian defender Robert Cornthwaite scored an own goal in extra time to pave the way for Selangor’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Terengganu in a third round FA Cup match at the Shah Alam Stadium on Wednesday.
The Red Giants had the quarter-final berth in their grasp until a minute before the end when Terengganu’s Cameroon import Vincent Bikana scored the equaliser to send the match into extra time. Brazilian Guilherme De Paula’s. 21st minute header had given Selangor the lead.
And it looked good enough for Selangor although their poor finishing denied them from adding to their tally – thanks to Selangor’s poor finishing. The homesters paid their price for the blunt attack and Terengganu took full advantage of that.
Luck was on Terengganu’s side when Cornthwaite’s header beat his goalkeeper Mohd Syamim Othman to put the visitors in the lead. The pressure was on the Red Giants and Terengganu in confidence.
To make it a miserable night for Selangor and their 15,000 supporters who had turned up at the Shah Alam Stadium former international Zairo Anuar Zailani hammered in Terengganu’s third goal in injury time for a 3-1 win.
In the quarter-finals Terengganu will face inaugural FA Cup champions Perak.
Two more FA Cup third round matches will be played on Saturday. Defending champions Pahang will take on MISC-MIFA at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan while Singapore outfit Lions XII will take SPA Putrajaya at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
