IT was a night to remember for 87,411 spectators – both local and foreign – who filled the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday (August 19) for the official opening ceremony of the 29th SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017.
They were mesmerised by the elaborate sporting and cultural showcase and displayed a great sense of unity and passion. This was evident as athletes and officials from 11 participating countries marched into the stadium for the customary parade of athletes.
It was truly a beautiful and moving experience to be able to witness the showcase which features the different culture and unique elements of Malaysia.
“I feel more involved in the SEA Games now after watching the opening ceremony. The organising committee did a great job and I hope Malaysia emerges as overall champion,” said Sanie Abdul Rahman, who hails from Petaling Jaya.
‘I was involved in the 2015 Singapore SEA Games and I think Malaysia did a great job too. The lighting effect was superb, simply spectacular…I enjoyed it a lot,” said Singaporean Poh Choo.
‘It was fantastic, the environment was simply electrifying…the crowd sportingly cheered for everyone and the spirit of ASEAN solidarity and brotherhood was clearly evident,” said Sok Munyrum from Cambodia.
The volunteers, fondly known as the WAU Factor team, were thrilled to bits to be involved in such a huge sporting event.
‘I’d say that tonight’s showcase was simply amazing. I think the performance was on par with the Olympics. I am very proud to be a Malaysian,” said Adri Rosli, a volunteer with the Games Secretariat.
‘This is the first time I am involved in the Games as a volunteer. I’m equally nervous and excited, but after watching the opening ceremony, I feel proud to be part of this greatest show of the night,” said another volunteer, Hasliza Mohd Sabri.
