Malaysia have two mixed doubles pairs in the quarter-finals in the USD600,000 Victor Korea Open Super Series after the completion of the second round matches in Seoul on Thursday.

Unseeded Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who won the silver in last month’s Sea Games in Kuala Lumpur, reached their first Super Series quarter-finals since coming together 10 months ago.

Ranked No 18, Soon Huat-Shevon Lai knocked out their better known compatriots and sixth seeds Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, ranked No 9 in a 71-minute battle to prevail 24-26, 21-18, 21-18.

The Malaysians will now face surprise quarter-finalist Marvin Emil Seidel-Lind Efler of Germany for a place in the last four. The Germans, promoted from the qualifying rounds overcame Japan’s Kenta Kazuro-Ayane Kurihara 21-19, 21-17.

Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See, ranked No 80 upset England’s husband and wife team, second seeds Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock 16-21, 21-18, 21-16 in a three-set thriller that lasted 71 minutes.

Their opponents in Friday’s quarter-finals are homesters Seo Seung-jae-Kim Ha-na who defeated Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet 12-21, 21-18, 24-22.

However, it was the end of Malaysia’s campaign in the men’s doubles when Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi went down 16-21, 20-22 to Indonesians second seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

The newly formed women’s doubles pair of Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi also failed to make the last eight – losing 7-21, 17-21 to China’s Huang Yaqiong-Yu Xiaohan in their second round match. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
