Two of three pairs made the quarter-finals in the mixed doubles as Malaysia kept their flag flying in USD700,000 Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza in Tokyo on Thursday.
In the last tie of the day, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing failed to make it three for Malaysia, losing 9-21, 18-21, to China’s Zhang Nan-Li Yinhui in a 40-minute match.
Earlier in the day, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying knocked out last year’s semi-finalists Pranaav Jerry Chopra-N. Sikki Reddy of India in straight games 21-16, 21-16 in 40 minutes.
The Olympic silver medallists, winner of the Japan Open in 2012, will face Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti for a place in the semi-finals. The Indonesians upset seventh-seeded husband and wife team of Chris Adcock-Gabrielle Adcock of England 23-21, 21-18.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying have a poor record against the Indonesians this year – holding a 2-0 advantage, having beaten the Malaysians in the India Open and the German Open.
Goh Soon Huat-Shevo Lai Pei Jing joined their compatriots in the quarters with a 21-13, 23-21win over China’s He Jiting-Du Yue in 42 minutes to earn a clash against second seeds Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping. The Chinese pair outplayed Chinese Taipei’s Wang Chi-lin-Lee Chia-hsin 21-8, 21-8. RIZAL ABDULLAH
