Malaysia’s No 1 men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong tightened their grip on securing the Rio Olympics ticket when they marched into the semi-finals in the USD300,000 Yonex Sunrise Indian Open Superseries in New Delhi on Friday.
The Malaysian’s came back from a set down to pull off a stunning 19-21, 21-16, 21-13 win over fourth seeds Mads Conrad Petersen-Mads Pieler Kolding in 58 minutes.
For a place in Sunday’s final the Malaysians will face Indonesia’s Gideon Markus Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. The Indonesians defeated Taiwan’s Chen Hung-ling-Wang Chi-lin 21-11, 21-17 in their quarter-final match.
The Malaysian pair who are the Commonwealth Games champions have a good chance to reach the final as they have beaten the Indonesians last year.
However, V Shem-Wee Kiong have never been consistent. This was reflected when they reached the semi-finals in the All-England Open SuperSeries Premier but fell in the second round in the Swiss Open Grand Prix Open a week later.
Another seeded pair to get booted was second seeds Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang of Korea who lost to seventh seeds Angga Pratama-Ricky Karanda Suwardi of Indonesia. The Indonesians won 15-21, 21-17, 21-19.
