Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair of Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen is in the final of the USD 150,000 Macau Open – their first BWF Tour Super 300 final – after pulling off a stunning upset in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The unseeded Malaysians showed their best form so far to stun fourth seeds and recently crowned Chinese Taipei Open winners Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida of Japan in straight games 21-16, 21-17 in a 41-minute encounter at the TAP SEAC Multipurpose Pavilion in Macau.
In the quarter-finals, on Friday it was another polished display to oust Hong Kong China’s Ng Tsz Yau-Yuen Sin Ying also in straight games with a 21-11, 21-13 victory.
Sunday’s final will it will face another Japanese hurdle for the Malaysians when they take on Misato Aratama-Akane Watanabe. The Japanese came from a game down to prevail 17-21, 21-14, 21-15 against Indonesia’s Yufira Barkah-Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto in 47 minutes.
While Vivian Hoo celebrated her younger brother Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See exited in the mixed doubles semi-finals after a hard fought 16-21, 21-19, 11-21 defeat to top seeds Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong China. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
