Malaysia returned home from the Yonex Vietnam Open which ended on Sunday empty handed – losing all the three semi-finals with women’s doubles top seeds Chow Mei Kuan-Lim Meng Yean the biggest disappointment.

The Malaysians gave a listless performance against Indonesia’s seventh seeds Della Destiara Haris-Rizki Amelia Pradipta and fell 7-21, 17-21. The mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See did no better in their semi-final encounter against Indonesians Riky Widianto-Masita Mahmudin who won 21-15, 28-26.

Privateer Goh Giap Chin’s hopes of reaching the men’s singles final were cut short by Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon who ran out 21-15, 21-15 winner.

Thailand (men’s singles and women’s doubles) and Indonesia (men’s doubles and mixed doubles) ended the tournament by winning two titles each while Japan took the women’s singles through Sayaka Takahashi.

Sea Games silver medal winner Khosit Phetpradab made up for the disappointment in Kuala Lumpur to win the men’s singles title in Ho Chi Minh City when the third seed defeated compatriot and 10th seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-15, 21-19 in 51 minutes.

In the Sea Games men’s singles final Khosit was beaten by Indonesia’s top seed Christie Jonatan 19-21, 16-21.

Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi, the top seed, outplayed home favourite Vu Thi Trang 21-9, 21-14 in 34 minutes.

In the men’s doubles Indonesia’s Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira-Ade Yusuf (seeded seven) upset Liao Min Chun-Su Cheng Heng of Chinese Taipei 12-21, 21-16, 23-21.

The mixed doubles was an all-Indonesia affair with Alfian Eko Prasetya-Melati Daeva Ektavianti snatching a 21-14, 21-14 win over unseeded compatriots Riky Widianto-Masita Mahmudin.

Thailand also won the women’s doubles through fifth seeds Chayanit Chaladchalam-Phataimas Muenwong who defeated Indonesia’s Della Destiara Haris-Rizki Amelia Pradipta 21-16, 21-19 in the final. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
