# Jin Wei goes out in the first round in women’s singles
# Double blow for both women’s doubles
National No 2 men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi was the only bright spark for Malaysia in the first round matches in the USD1Million Victor China Open which got underway in Changzhou, Jiangsu on Tuesday.
The Malaysians moved into the second round with a 21-11, 21-15 win over England’s Marcus Ellis-Chris Langridge in 37 minutes. Next is a tough hurdle for Yew Sin-Ee Yi – against China’s second seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen, the runners-up in last week’s Japan Open in Tokyo.
Malaysia’s top pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong go into the fray on Wednesday and will meet India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the first round.
However, it was a disastrous day for the women shuttlers at the Olympic Sports Center Xincheng Gymnasium with both the women’s doubles pair and Goh Jin Wei in the women’s singles making a first round exit.
Newly formed doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen, playing in only their third tournament together was packed off 19-21, 16-21 in 37 minutes. It was also all over for Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean going down in straight games 16-21, 17-21 in another 37-minute encounter.
Former world junior champion Jin Wei, who will be Malaysia’s flag bearer in the coming Youth Olympics in Argentina, put up a determined fight against second seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan before bowing in three games – 23-21, 12-21, 21-15 in 49 minutes.
With the defeat of Jin Wei, it is now Malaysia to Soniia Cheah to carry Malaysia’s challenge in the women’s singles. Soniia plays Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in the first round on Wednesday. RIZAL ABDULLAHÂ
